Exploring Gastric Sleeve (Bariatric Surgery)
Gastric sleeve surgery, often referred to as sleeve gastrectomy, is a bariatric surgical
intervention designed to diminish stomach size by surgically excising a portion of it. This
procedure, typically conducted under general anesthesia, involves creating several small
incisions across the abdomen. Employing a laparoscope, the surgeon extracts around 75-80% of the
stomach, yielding a sleeve-like structure significantly smaller than the original.
The reduced stomach dimensions restrict food intake, facilitating substantial weight loss over
time. Generally recommended for individuals with severe obesity, characterized by a body mass
index (BMI) of 40 or higher, or for those with a BMI of 35 or higher who grapple with
obesity-related ailments such as type 2 diabetes or hypertension.
